Air Force Heritage Conference, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base

A popular feature at airshows is the Air Force Heritage Flight, in which modern jets fly in formation with vintage warbirds. Each year the participants in the Heritage Flight practice their formation flying before the airshow season at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

Lockheed-Martin F-22A Raptor of the 27th Fighter Squadron Fighting Eagles and North American P-51D Mustang NL351MX, 44-74391 February Lockheed-Martin F-22A Raptor of the 27th Fighter Squadron Fighting Eagles and North American P-51D Mustang NL351MX February. P-51D NL351MX was delivered to the US Army Air Corps as 44-74391 on May 23, 1945. Its construction number is 122-40931. It was stored at the 4003rd AAF Base Unit ATC in New Jersey later in 1945. In February 1947, it was assigned to the 4121st AAF Base Unit at Kelly AFB, Texas. In January 1948, it was transferred to the 113th Fighter Squadron of the Indiana Air National Guard at Stout Field in Indianapolis. In October 1950, it was assigned to the 156th Fighter Squadron of the North Carolina Air National Guard at Charlotte. A month later it was transferred to the 123rd Fighter Bomber Wing of the Tactical Air Command at Goodman Air Force Base, Kentucky. In December 1951, it was assigned to the 21st Fighter Bomber Squadron TAG at George Air Force Base, California. In January 1953, it was transfered to the 21st Fighter Bomber Squadron TAG at George Air Force Base and then to the 124th Fighter Bomber Squadron of the California Air National Guard at George Air Force Base in May 1953. In June 1955, it was assigned to the 169th Fighter Bomber Squadron of the Illinois Air National Guard at Greater Peoria Airport. In October 1956, it was stored at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, California. It was dropped from US Air Force inventory in April 1958 and purchased by the Guatemalan Air Force as FAG 351. Don Bull of Sugarland, Texas registered it as N38229 in August 1972 and sold it to Connie and Wilson C. Edwards of Big Spring, Texas in 1978. Heber Costello and HEC Equipment LLC of Oak Grove, Louisiana acquired it on June 5, 2000 and sold it to Chris and Woodson Woods of Woods Aviation in Carefree, Arizona in October 2000. It was registered as N351MX in 2001. Art Vance took it aloft on its first flight following restoration in February 2003. It flies as February, the mount of Jim Brooks, who flew with the 307th Fighter Squadron of the 31st Fighter Group of the 15th Air Force.

P-38L NL38TF was delivered to the US Army Air Corps as 44-53095. Its construction number is 422-8351. It was modified as a two-pace P-38M night fighter. After the war it was purchased by R. A. Wardell and R. W. Martin of Jacksboro, Oregon in 1946 and registered as NL67745. It was acquired by the Fuerza Aerea Hondurena as FAH503 and was later assigned FAH506. It was struck off charge by the Fuerza Aerea Hondurena in 1960. Bob Bean Aircraft of Blythe, California acquired it on February 2, 1960 and registered it as N9005R. William Ross of Elk Grove Village, Illinois bought it in 1969 and flew it as 453095 Der Gabelshwanz Teufel. Robert L. Waltrip and Air-SRV of Houston, Texas acquired it in November 1986 and sold it to the Lone Star Flight Museum in 1988. It was damaged in an accident at Galveston, on May 4, 1997. It flew as Putt Putt Maru #100. Tom Blair of Kissimee, Florida bought it in 2007. It has been registered to Commanche Fighters LLS of Houston, Texas since November 6, 2008. It flies as Thoughts of Midnight #120.

NL20TF has been registered to Chino Warbirds Incorporated since December 2001. It was rebuilt as a Cavalier T Mk. 2 two seater in the 1960s. It received a new Air Force serial number, 67-14866, and was delivered to the FA Boliviana as FAB 521 on January 19, 1968. It was recovered by Arny Carnegie of Edmonton, Alberta in December 1977 and recieved the Canadian registration C-GXUR. McClain Flight Service of Strathmmore, Alberta bought it in November 1978. Cinema Air of Houston, Texas registered it as N20TF in October 1991.

NL85104 flew for the Army Air Corps as 42-105192. It was delivered to the Royal Canadian Air Force as 858. Fred Dyson bought it and 42-106396 at Boeing Field, Seattle, Washington on October 23, 1947. It was owned by W. Bridges in Jackson, Mississippi from 1952 to 1954. Louis Rice of Marysville, California bought it in 1954 and very quickly sold it to Richard Rowlette of Riverside, California. Walter Brockin, also of Riverside, acquired it in 1955 nd then sold it to W. Keith Larkin of Weather Modification Company in San Jose, California. It was damaged in a wheels up landing near Denver, Colorado in 1958. The Air Museum in Ontario restored it to static display condition in 1959. Restoration of the airframe was begun in 1977. It made its first flight after restoration in 1981, when it acquired its current registration. It is powered by an Allison V-1710 twelve-cylinder engine.
